We were tired of budgeting apps that treat your financial data like a product to be sold. Existing apps are expensive or simply don't respect your privacy. We built Basalt with one simple principle: your financial data should never leave your control.
Obsidian pioneered the file-based local-first philosophy that proves a sustainable business is possible without selling user data. We believe this concept deserves to bloom beyond productivity apps. Basalt is our initiative to push this philosophy into personal finance — you own your data, and you choose how to sync it.
Free tier gives you the complete Basalt experience on your device — no limits, no ads, no data selling. When you need cross-device sync, our optional Sync plan undercutting all the competition. sync plan also adds AI-powered features like import from screenshots and PDFs.
Absolutely. Basalt stores all your data in plain YAML files. On iPhone, iCloud sync is free. On desktop, you can use iCloud, Dropbox, Syncthing, or any file sync service you prefer to sync between two desktop versions. When we release our sync plan, infrastructure will be fully encrypted on both ends.
AI features like import from screenshots and PDFs are part of our sync plan. But here's the cool part: you can also bring your own API key. Google Gemini keys are free, which means you can use all AI features without paying for the sync plan.
